The Second Sunday after Trinity - 21 June 2020

Click here if you want to download the service sheet, or just follow from this page.

Why is there a picture of the MASH crew here? You’ll have to listen to Fr Andrew’s sermon to find out!

Today’s Gospel reading is not an easy one! Fortunately we have a good friend of St Matthew’s, Fr Andrew Zihni, as our guest preacher, and he unpacks it for us.

Fr Andrew is the Assistant Diocesan Director of Ordinands for Southwark Diocese, and a Priest Vicar of St Margaret’s, Westminster. We are delighted to welcome him back in a virtual capacity.

Opening Voluntary

Our opening voluntary is Purcell’s trumpet tune from The Cebell.  Click on the link to listen before the service begins.

Light a candle to prepare yourself and pray that your heart may be open to the working of God's Spirit. Our service begins as it normally would at 9.30am. Please click on the link, and make the responses yourself. If you would like to sing along to the hymn the words are below.

Opening Hymn and Welcome

The beginning of the service can be accessed from the youtube clip. Please join in with the responses, and hymns.

O God, our help in ages past
our hope for years to come,
our shelter from the stormy blast,
and our eternal home.

Under the shadow of thy throne
thy saints have dwelt secure;
sufficient is thine arm alone,
and our defence is sure.

Before the hills in order stood,
or earth received her frame,
from everlasting thou art God,
to endless years the same.

O God, our help in ages past
our hope for years to come,
be thou our guard while troubles last,
and our eternal home.

Pr.

+ In the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit.

All

Amen

Pr.

The Lord be with you.

All

And also with you

Confessing our sins

We have not always lived our lives as we might have done. We have done wrong and hurt others. Let’s seek God’s forgiveness. We pray together:

All:

Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
we have sinned against you and against our neighbour
in thought and word and deed,
through negligence, through weakness,
through our own deliberate fault.
We are truly sorry and repent of all our sins.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, who died for us,
forgive us all that is past
and grant that we may serve you in newness of life
 to the glory of your name.  Amen
.

The priest gives the absolution, and we respond. Amen.

Praising God’s glory

We sing to praise God’s glory. Please join in with Jonathan

Glory to God in the highest,
and peace to his people on earth.
Lord God, heavenly King, almighty God and Father,
we worship you, we give you thanks,
we praise you for your glory.
Lord Jesus Christ, only Son of the Father,
Lord God, Lamb of God,
you take away the sin of the world,
have mercy on us;
you are seated at the right hand of the Father,
receive our prayer.
For you alone are the Holy One,
you alone are the Lord,
you alone are the Most High, Jesus Christ,
with the Holy Spirit in the glory of God the Father.
Amen.

The priest prays the Collect – the prayer for the day

Reading

David reads the Old Testament reading, which is Jeremiah 20.7-13.

We stand for the Gospel reading, Matthew 10.24-39.

Creed

We say the Nicene Creed.

All

We believe in one God,
the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth,
of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God,
eternally begotten of the Father,
God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God,
begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father;
through him all things were made.
For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven,
was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary
and was made man.
For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate;
he suffered death and was buried.
On the third day he rose again
in accordance with the Scriptures;
he ascended into heaven
and is seated at the right hand of the Father.
He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead,
and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life,
who proceeds from the Father and the Son,
who with the Father and the Son is worshipped and glorified,
who has spoken through the prophets.
We believe in one holy, catholic and apostolic Church.
We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins.
+ We look for the resurrection of the dead,
and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

The Prayers

Mary leads us in prayer this morning.

The Peace

Let’s share the peace!  Click on the youtube clip for the next part of the service

As the altar is prepared, we sing our offertory hymn.

Love divine, all love’s excelling,
joy of heaven, to earth come down,
fix in us thy humble dwelling,
all thy faithful mercies crown.
Jesu, thou art all compassion,
pure unbounded love thou art;
visit us with thy salvation,
enter every trembling heart.

Come, almighty to deliver,
let us all thy life receive;
suddenly return, and never,
never more thy temples leave.
Thee we would be always blessing,
serve thee as thy hosts above,
pray, and praise thee without ceasing,
glory in thy perfect love.

Finish then thy new creation,
pure and spotless let it be;
let us see thy great salvation,
perfectly restored in thee,
changed from glory into glory,
till in heaven we take our place,
till we cast our crowns before thee,
lost in wonder, love, and praise!

The Eucharistic Prayer

We now come to the heart of the mass, the prayer of consecration. Please join in with singing or saying the responses.

Pr.

The Lord be with you

All

And also with you

Pr.

Lift up your hearts.

All

We lift them to the Lord.

Pr.

All

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.

It is right to give thanks and praise.

The Acclamation:

Pr.

Great is the mystery of faith.

All

Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

The Sanctus and Benedictus (Sanctus means ‘holy’, Benedictus means ‘blessed’):

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might,
Heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest.
+Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

The Agnus Dei (which means ‘Lamb of God’)

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world, Grant us peace.

This is a prayer for you to say at the point at which you would be receiving the bread and wine.  You are making a spiritual communion in place of a sacramental communion, as that is not possible at this time.

In union, O Lord with the faithful at every altar of your Church, where the Holy Eucharist is celebrated, I desire to offer you praise and thanksgiving. I present to you my soul and body with the earnest wish that I may always be united to you. And since I cannot now receive you sacramentally, I ask you to come spiritually into my heart. I unite myself to you, and embrace you with all the affections of my soul. Let nothing ever separate you from me. May I live and die in your love. Amen.

Anthem

As we reflect on our spiritual communion, members of our choir sing 'View me Lord, a work of thine', by Richard Lloyd.

The Blessing

Please click on this link for the end of the service.

The final hymn…

All

Let all the world in every corner sing,
My God and King!
The heavens are not too high,
his praise my thither fly;
the earth is not too low,
his praises there may grow.
Let all the world in every corner sing,
My God and King!

Let all the world in every corner sing,
My God and King!
The church with psalms must shout,
no door can keep them out;
But above all, the heart
must bear the longest part.
Let all the world in every corner sing,
My God and King!

Jonathan’s closing voluntary is an old favourite: Toccata by Theodore Debois.

In next week’s service we will welcome our new curate, Alastair Newman.

We’ll be hosting this service live on zoom. Please join us at 10am.
